Gjetost cheese

On the left is brie, on the right is gjetost cheese. I got this on cheese clearance at Smiths because I'd never tried it before. The picture doesn't really do justice to the surprising (alarming) brownness of this cheese. In its native Norway it's apparently called brunost, meaning brown cheese. It's made by boiling down milk products until they turn into what essentially is a block of caramel cheese, and that's pretty much what it tastes like. Sweetest. Cheese. Ever. I don't see it becoming my favoritest cheese ever, but it's pretty darn interesting.

My favorite cheese right now is Kerrygold aged cheddar, by the way. Best sharp cheddar I've ever had. A little expensive to cook with, but great for shredding on top of stuff or just eating on crackers. Yum.

  1. I'm definitely going to have to seek out this Gjetost of which you speak. Our local supermarket has a nice cheese counter and we're always trying out something or other.

I like Kerrygold cheddar a lot. I think my favorite way to eat it is to cut it into little cubes and put it in a salad with cut up apples.

The best cheese we've discovered in the last year is actually from Utah, Beehive Cheese Company. We've had their SeaHive (rubbed with local honey and ancient seabed salt). But their best might be dicey depending on how you interpret your WoW: Barely Buzzed, a lavender-flavored cheddar with espresso grounds rubbed into the rind. This is a phenomenal cheese. Well worth seeking out.

  2. I bet Kerrygold would be great with apples.

Our Harmon's up the street carries Beehive cheese. They have a pretty nice cheese counter for a general grocery.

I've tried a couple kinds (New Moon and I don't remember the other one) and they had decent flavor but they were very dry. But I haven't seen SeaHive there. Barely Buzzed looked intriguing but I haven't tried it yet. Maybe I should pick some up next time I'm looking for exciting cheese. If I get really lucky the cheese guy might give me a free sample.

  3. I want to try all the cheeses mentioned in this thread :) All of them! By the way, I had a funny moment reading Brother Momonjii's comment. I misread "WoW" as world of warcraft like five times before it clicked that he meant word of wisdom hahaha. Is it clear enough yet how many geeks I know who talk about World of Warcraft?

  4. So I picked up some Barely Buzzed today (Harmon's had a thin=cheap slice for sale) and it's pretty good. I'm much more impressed with it than I was with New Moon.

And you know what's funny? I even go to church but I still think World of Warcraft first when I see WoW. Too much time on the internets, I guess. ;)

  5. you know what's funnier. for some reason, I just read it as the word wow. I thought he was saying something like: it depends of your definition of awesome.

  6. That makes you the _least_ geeky sibling, I guess. ;)

  7. So, I just tried some gjetost (for anybody else looking for it the brand we got spelled it "geitost") - we had a friend over tonight and put out some cheese for her and Akiko to snack on while I stir-fried the goya chanpuru.

I love this cheese. It's definitely the weirdest cheese I've ever tasted, like Joanna says. It reminds me of some fermented tofu I had in Okinawa that they call "Okinawan cheese." But I love it!

We also tried another cheese that's worth mentioning, a Jamaican cheese called Beecher's No Woman (like the Bob Marley song). It's like a jack, but it's marbled with jerk spice, for a nice complex smoky-spicy-sweet flavor.

As far as I'm concerned, we could have a whole blog just about cheese.

  8. I tried some cheese with jerk seasoning at Harmon's once (I didn't buy any that time but they have it pretty regularly) that was really interesting. I don't remember what it was called though, I'll have to see if it's the same thing you guys had.

  9. I saw the Gjetost cheese at a store yesterday and almost got it but I got this "Huntsman's three-layer" stuff instead that is stilton and cheddar-type-cheese layered. It's good. Next time I will get the Gjetost :)

  10. I think I've seen that Huntsman's layered cheese thing, but I didn't know what exactly the layers were so I got havarti with dill instead (which is pretty good). It sounds interesting, maybe I'll check for it next time I'm looking at cheese.
